The YT Mob World Tour: Episode #1

Together with the YT Mob we are traveling six continents this year to search the next "Young Talent" for the YT Mob. After all six Young Talent camps, we will choose two Young Talents to sign them up for 2020 as part of the YT Mob.

The video series "The YT Mob World Tour" follows us on this trip around the world and gives insights on the unique work of YT Mob Team Owner Martin Whiteley and World Cup Athlete Angel Suarez during the Young Talent Camps. Furthermore the series tries to figure out what it needs to become a successful Downhill World Cup professional. For that reason, World Cup athletes such as Brook MacDonald, Greg Minnaar and Neko Mulally – all former protégés and discovered by Martin Whiteley – will be seen on screen to answer this question. And of course: at the end of seven episodes we will finally know which two talents will join the YT Mob for 2020.

Episode #1 – What is Talent?

„There’s no rule book for talent. If there was one, everybody out there would be doing the same.“

– Martin Whiteley

Nobody tells you, where you can find talent or how you get talented. Because nobody knows. That’s what makes searching talent so hard. But it’s possible to find some diamonds in the rough. Especially if you have Martin Whiteley by your side. The YT Mob Team Owner discovered and supported UCI World Cup Pros such as Brook MacDonald, Neko Mulally and Greg Minnaar on becoming a professional athlete, that’s why he knows talent has many faces. And Martin knows that it takes more than talent to be successful.

The secret to success

But what are factors that define talent? What is it that we are looking for in the Young Talent Camps? What triggers us to believe that a young rider will be able to ride successfully for the YT Mob in 2020? Talent is meaningless until you go for it. If you’re not willing to put in the work to harvest and cultivate your talent, then talent itself is quite useless. NBA professional Kevin Durant put it like that:

„Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.“

Therefore, if talent and hard work go hand in hand it provides better results. And what helps you with that is passion. If you are born with the potential to become a genius, you will not become a true genius without loving what you do. Passion helps you stay on track, never stop learning or improving. In the end, your determination will decide whether you are actually going to succeed or not. That's why at the Young Talent Camps, we're looking for talented young people with a skillset like this bearing enough potential to succeed in the near future.

What happens at the Young Talent Camps?

In total we organize six Young Talent Camps on six continents. Today we have done four, two more camps in North America and South Africa to come. 500 Young Talents from 45 different countries applied to be part of the world Tour. We chose 20 participants per camp to experience three days with the YT Mob and gain valuable knowledge from Mob Rider Angel Suarez, such as teaching them how to walk a course, find the perfect line, maintaining speed and everything else that matters to become a successful downhill pro.

„It’s amazing to have the opportunity to help super talented kids improve and it’s great to see how many good riders there are around the world. When I was starting out, I always found it very helpful to have someone more experienced by my side that trusted me, boosted my self-confidence and helped me feel more comfortable on the bike. That was one of the most important things at that stage in my career and I hope I can do the same for the kids I meet at the camps. Every kid has a different skillset and I think it will be hard to find the most complete riders, but I am really enjoying the process.

– Angel Suarez, YT Mob Pro Rider

At the end of all Young Talent Camps we will invite the eight most promising talents to the Mob HQ in Granada, Spain. And there, in a final camp, we will decide which two talents will ride for the YT Mob in 2020.

Back to our roots

Talent, pure passion and the unbreakable will to fully unfold ones potential is essential to every successful career and also values YT’s own story of success is founded on. YT stands for Young Talent for a good reason, that’s why we see it as our job to give all Young Talents out there an opportunity to succeed. That's why the YT Mob World Tour is a project that has so much passion and that tells the DNA of YT:

„We stand for finding and unleashing young talent. YT Industries is stoked to be working together with Martin on this because true to our roots we want to give Young Talents a chance to show their potential and prove their passion for mountain biking. We are convinced that ‘The Mob World Tour’ is a unique opportunity to uncage the talent out there and are looking forward to seeing how The Mob will develop.“

– Markus Flossmann, CEO YT Industries

As title sponsor, we look forward to learning more about the secret of success for world-class downhill riders over the next few months, and much more to getting to know the next generation of young talents in downhill sports.
